Jemma Bezant, from New Quay, has been wild swimming for five years and runs the popular Facebook group Wales Wild Swimmers . The group is designed to get people swimming in Wales&apos, beautiful upland lakes and salty coasts.

Jemma first went wild swimming time five years ago, when her friend convinced her to take part in the New Year’s Day swim in New Quay. She said: “The water that day was cold at nine degrees. I swum out quite easily while most everyone else was running out screaming. I was hooked.†Jemma spent the rest of the winter wild swimming every other day, and her love of the water even inspired her to move closer to the coast. Now she lives just 50 yards from the water - meaning she can even spot dolphins from her house. Speaking about the most extreme conditions she has experienced, Jemma said: “I once swam in a disused quarry where we had to break the ice to get in. I love the sting of cold water!†For her last birthday, Jemma went to the northern Arctic Circle in Norway to swim in a fjord which was a chilly two degrees. As an archaeologist, Jemma often visits to remote places for work, and always consults a map before to suss out the good swimming spots. The popularity of wild swimming has accelerated over lockdown, but it does not come without its risks. A spokesperson for Conwy Council said: “On the coast, check the weather forecast and the tide times before you set off, get local information, and look out for any safety signage.†Jemma, who is also an RNLI Coastguard rescue officer, recommends acclimatising your body over a few days, checking tide time and direction and checking with landowners and other swimmers for location specific tips. Natural Resources Wales who manage the rivers and waterways of Wales, have a wild swimming code on their website. Their top tips are: Make sure that there aren’t any hidden objects in the water. Make sure that it is deep enough for you not to hit the bottom. Remember that the way you dive in will affect how deep you go. Be aware of fast-flowing water and strong currents, particularly around waterfalls and rapids. Take care around the water’s edge as rocks, grass and mud can be slippery and unstable.
