Why we are called Weekenddating. It was 2003 and I (Jay) was working in corporate america. All of my friends were getting married, had girlfriends and it was not fun being the last single one of the group. A co-worker named Samantha said that she saw this thing on the news called Hurry Date and it would be right up my alley. I went to a few events and they were always held on a Tuesday or Wednesday night. I loved the concept but wouldnt get home until 11:30 PM and had to be up for work at 6 am. I started looking for events that were held on the weekend, but. None existed. So I decided to start my own company and hence, Weekenddating was born. Since those days, we occassionally have a midweek event, but the focus continues to be on Weekend events. Why speed dating works. How many times have you seen someone you would like to approach but did not? Nobody wants that uncomfortable feeling. The beauty of the NYC speed dating is that the awkwardness is removed from the equation. No pressure getting into conversations. Even better. No pressure getting out of conversations. That is all done for you. Ok, full disclosure here.. A lot comes down to some luck, who is there the night you are. However it really does work and I know of at least 85 married couples, 10 or more kids and lots of happy couples. Can you really get to know someone in 5 minutes? Is it enough time to know if you will marry this person? Of course not.. However the five minutes is plenty of time to determine if this is someone you might want to get to know more about. If you are not sure after the mini date, they you can always give the person a yes and figure it out later. What goes on at the speed dating event? Arrive about 15-30 minutes prior to start time so that you can settle in. Check in with your host to receive your welcome packet (We do check for proof of age to make sure we deliver what is advertised). Once we get started, everyone is paired off into groups of two. You spend approximately five minutues with someone and then jot down a few notes to help you remember who they are. (If you do not take notes, it can get confusing since you are meeting a lot of people). Next, the guys shift over one spot and we start the process again. How many people will I meet? The minimum number of dates is 8 and the maximum number of dates will be about 12. It varies each time. We adjust the amount of time per date based on the total number of dates. How do I let you know who I liked? For in person events, you will hand in a scorecard to let us know your selections. Within 24 hours, you will receive an email that lets you know who you matched with. Both mutual matches and one way matches (they picked you, but you did not pick them), will be be provided.
