Yes, I have a lot of close friends who are men. Some are married, some are single, some are gay, some are straight. We shop together, we dine together, we drink together and we confide in each other. A female friend is likely to tell you — in part because she believes it and in part because she wants to make you feel better —that the guy fled because he was scared off by his intense adoration and big feelings for you. A male friend knows the real deal: The guy got a better offer and took it because he’s not that interested in you. And should be avoided. Because you are fabulous. Lots of times, women feel self-conscious eating in front of male romantic interests. Is that mixed-up and wrong? Of course. • Will always cheer your successes. Why? Because for better or worse, they don’t consider you a rival the way even some of your girlfriends do. Their congratulations aren’t accompanied by an eye roll or a whispered under-their-breath insult. • Think their jokes and nicknames for you are hilarious and clever. They usually aren’t. But that’s what makes them so funny. • Think you are very wise — especially when it comes to other women. For several weeks, one of my male friends has been quizzing me about the meaning of every action a woman he likes makes. What does the peck on the lips she gave him mean? What does the fact she let him spend the night on her sofa mean? My opinion: It doesn’t mean much. Which is when my friend decided I do not have all the answers.
