According to a study conducted by Gleeden, the first extramarital dating site in India started by women, 1.35 lakh Bengalureans on the site are having extramarital affairs , the highest recorded in the country. Of this, about 43,200 are women. (Although Gleeden did not provide figures for the other cities, it confirmed that Bengaluru had the highest number of people seeking extramarital relations.) According to a study by Gleeden, 43,200 women in the city are looking for ‘excitement and freedom’ outside their marriage. Solene Paillet, Marketing Specialist for Gleeden, says, “It won’t be wrong if we call Bengaluru the ‘infidelity capital ’ of India. Out of the total numbers of subscribers on Gleeden, 27% of the total active users are from Bengaluru and the men-women ratio is 32% : 68%.†One of the users, a 31-year-old woman says she feels ‘free’ from her monotonous life. “Actually the affair has helped to improve my relationships with my family,†she says. Before her extramarital relationship, she said she lacked motivation. The mother of a six-year-old child says she doesn’t want to leave her family. “I hope my child will understand, if he ever finds out, that the relationship made his mother happy,†she says. Paillet adds, “In double income households in large metropolitan cities, it’s common for husbands and wives to go on business trips. 52% of women and 57% of men who have registered with us have cheated during such trips.†Dr Naveen Jayaram, consultant psychiatrist, Sakra World Hospital Bengaluru says the reasons for extramarital affairs could be incompatibility, long distance relationships, long working hours of a partner, and a monotonous life. Dr Bhupendra Chaudhry, consultant psychiatrist, Manipal Hospitals, says that women also stray to experiment or when they are not sexually satisfied. “After a certain time, they feel the burden of handling two relationships. Some try to make things right and open up to their partners but they feel the guilt of having cheated on someone who trusted them,†he says. Prakash Belawadi, actor, journalist, theatre person and media personality, laughed and called it a ‘a bogus claim and a promotional gimmick’. “I don’t trust this site and hence would not like to comment unless someone authenticates their claims. It is also important to ask what constitutes an affair. How long should they have been seeing each other to call it an affair?†he asked. But, in a population of 1.2 crore, he says he’s not surprised that 1 lakh people are having extramarital affairs. Gita Aravamudan, author and journalist, also tends to suspect the study. She says the dating site would be used by only those who are tech savvy. “Extramarital affairs can exist across the society. There would still be many people who do not have access to this dating site but are having extramarital affairs. It’s a wild guess, I think.†Writer Chaya Srivatsa adds that it is understandable that Bengaluru records the highest number of extramarital affairs because the city, as the IT capital, gets a lot of professionals from other cities who come here to work. “They stay away from home and hence look to connect with someone. But it need not necessarily be for physical needs. It could be for companionship too. It could also be a platonic relationship. I would call it an extramarital affair only when they are looking for physicl intimacy,†she says.
